Hello Timebomb is Justin Markert’s new band. Justin has been playing around cleveland here and there for a number of years, whether with his now disbanded indie/pop rock group “Swimming with Angels” or as a solo artist, Justin has opened for a slew of national acts including, Sondre Lerche, Mason Jennings, Brandon Benson, Denison Witmer, Duncan Sheik and more. After laying low for a few years, Justin is currently recording an ep with Keith Vance that will be out on Cellar Door Records in March.

Doug Ivancic is a singer/songwriter who spent most of his years in Madison Ohio. His songs are rich in lyrical layering, recalling the talents of Tom Waits, Neil Young and Chris Martin. Doug is also gearing up to release an ep later in 2010.

Label Hosts Dual Cd Release Show At Grog Shop

Painesville-based Cellar Door Records (cellardoorrecords.com), formed last year, announced its presence with its first official release last August, a compilation titled Cellar Door Records: Volume II. The label’s now hosting a double CD release party to launch debut records by one of the bands on that compilation, Madison, Ohio-based hard rockers Frozen Hellsicles (myspace.com/the frozenhellsicles), plus Cleveland noise rockers the Slow Blade (myspace.com/ theslowblade). The release of the Frozen Hellsicles’ Oh No Wait a Minute, which was mixed in Kent by Todd Tobias (Guided by Voices, Robert Pollard), and the Slow Blade’s Kill the Lights will be celebrated at the Grog Shop (2785 Euclid Heights Blvd., 216.321.5588) at 9 p.m. Friday, May 6. BEHIND (and in front of) THE MUSIC


Well ladies and gentlemen, the time has arrived. We are very excited to announce that Cellar Door Records will be releasing two albums simultaneously. On May 16th, 2008 at the Grog Shop we will be releasing the long awaited full length debut from The Frozen Hellsicles, titled: “Oh No Wait A Minute.” We will also be releasing the brand new full length from The Slow Blade, titled: “Kill the Lights.” Of course both bands will be performing that night along with special guests The Uncanny Xela. All three of these bands have a history with Cellar Door so this will be a very special night for us. Admission to the show is $10 and that gets you copies of BOTH cds. Show starts at 9pm sharp. Check back soon for sound clips from the album.

The Frozen Hellsicles album “Oh No Wait A Minute” was recorded and mixed by Todd Tobias (Guided By Voices, Robert Pollard) at Waterloo Studios in Kent and “Kill the Lights” by The Slow Blade was recorded by Keith Vance at home.

It all started with a coffee shop and the 2001 cult film “Donnie Darko,” which declares the phrase “cellar door” the most beautiful of all possible word combinations in the English language.

“The whole ‘Donnie Darko’-is-the-coolest-movie-in-the-world craze hadn’t caught on yet,” explains Justin Markert, who opened Cellar Door Coffee and Music with business partner Rick Fike in 2003. “We pulled in a lot of local bands and a couple of national tours in this little 130-capacity place.”

Though the duo sold the Madison, Ohio, business in 2004, last year they joined forces with Adam Butcher and announced the creation of Cellar Door Records by releasing a six-artist compilation disc. We recently talked to Markert about Northeast Ohio’s newest independent label.

How did these six acts end up on your Cellar Door Records compilation?
We put together a list of who we thought was good and realized a lot of these artists were part of our history when we had the coffee shop. … Pretty much every act we talked to said they were in. We got them together and put them in a studio.

So, all of the tracks were recorded during that week and a half of studio time?
Everyone except This Is Exploding — those were tracks they already had — and Keith Vance, who is a very DIY-type artist and does home recordings.

When will we see the first full-length recordings from your artist roster?
We’re going with The Frozen Hellsicles first, which will be a spring release. And we’re working with Keith Vance, who’s doing his own recording. When he’s done we’re going to get together with him to put something out.

It’s a tough time for the music business. What made you want to do this?
We have a good mix of interest in music and arts in combination with business sense. … We’re not trying to be anything we’re not. We’re just trying to get the ball rolling and get some good music out there.
